Newspapers served a pivotal role in information access for colonial American. Scholar, Arthur M. Schlesinger analyzes the overlooked role of newspapers in the communication circuit of colonial America. Schlesinger draws attention to a key moment when the printing press leaders became valuable persuaders of public opinion, “Little wonder that the printers emerged from the contest over the stamp act with an exhilarated sense of their importance to the community. That had become acutely conscious of a new political and social forces that they controlled: the power of the press.” (Schlesinger 81) Even Franklin’s influence could not repress the newfound political force of the press. Dissemination of information regarding views on the Stamp Act moved the colonists towards questioning the laws being imposed upon them by Great Britain.
